18th of May 2016 saw the return of the West Midlands School Leaders Annual Conference to the Chateau Impney Hotel & Exhibition Centre for its second edition: Through the Looking Glass – The School Led System in Focus. The brief for this 2016 edition was to design the ideal content and environment to encourage focused examinations of the school led system progress over the past 12 months and the importance of collaboration in driving its healthy development across the West Midlands.
Mary Rhodes, BBC Midlands Today presenter, hosted the over 200 attendees in the Regent Centre and navigated the diverse full day programme which included a welcome from Richard Gill, West Midlands Representative on the Teaching Schools Council, a keynote address from Sir David Carter, National Schools Commissioner, expert panel discussions, various live voting sessions, record-setting Yachtswoman Dee Caffari as the inspirational speaker and a closing presentation from Roger Pope, Chair of the National College for Teaching and Leadership.
Surprise performances from Worcestershire Youth Jazz Orchestra and Academy Theatre Arts Worcester kick-started the morning and afternoon sessions with attendees enjoying the music of a clarinet quartet during lunch. Featuring an updated format, the conference introduced expert led workshops on three relevant subjects and a number of peer2peer expertise-sharing clinics. The conference attracted commercial support from 8 headline sponsors in addition to 18 exhibitors.
